Dr. Andrews, ½ of a set of twins born in Heidelburg, Germany, moved to Maine from Hartford, Connecticut at the delicate age of five and has lived in Portland the majority of his life (This makes him "almost" a Maine native). A graduate of Deering High School and the University of Maine at Orono, he then received his DVM degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. He returned to Maine and practiced in a mixed animal practice (with many stories to tell) until February of 1983 when he joined with Dr. Norman Stiles and Dr. Lesley Birmingham at the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital. Since Dr.Stiles' retirement in January of 2006 and Dr. Birmingham’s retirement in January 2008, Dr. Andrews has reluctantly ascended to the position of “wise veterinary elder” within the practice.
His professional pursuits include serving as past president of the local Downeast Veterinary Medical Association, president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, and president of the New England Veterinary Association. Currently Dr. Andrews is serving the State of Maine Veterinarians as the Maine Representative to their National Organization, the American Veterinary Medical Association and remains as a vice president and editor of the International Association of Fly Fishing Veterinarians (www.iaffv.org.).
Dr. Andrews’ favorite part of the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital are the many clients he has developed relationships with over the past 30 years. The “human at the end of the leash” creates a never ending pleasant rewarding day with many opportunities to help people and their pets thrive in Southern Maine.
Outside interests include a lifetime of involvement with music and percussion from high school and college marching bands, choir, community orchestra, concert band, community theater, and recently, world percussion, including the African Djembe, Middle Eastern Frame drums, and the Irish Bouran. A retired runner with many entries at the Beach to Beacon or Boy’s Club Patriot’s Day 5 mile run, he remains physically active with the "Old Boot" hockey league, and the "Mighty Docs" Veterinary Hockey Team in the winter. In the summer you may catch him on a wave surfing at Higgins Beach, fly fishing for the elusive stripe bass, brook trout or landlocked salmon deep into the woods of Maine, or riding his recently acquired Suzuki Burgman Motorscooter or BMW LT touring bike with his wife, Elizabeth.
Dr. Katy Hazzard grew up primarily in Florida and Idaho, though she is a New Englander by birth and heritage. She and her husband Chuck live in Freeport, and their resident family includes five cats and a dog. They are particularly proud of Brooke, their Vizsla, who is a seemingly-tireless running companion and a regular model for FetchDog. Dr. Hazzard earned her Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Denison University with a minor in philosophy, followed by her veterinary medical doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed externships in neurology and internal medicine at Angell Memorial in Boston and ophthalmology and shelter medicine and surgery at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she practiced exclusively feline medicine and surgery for five years before joining the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital team in July of 2004; she became part owner of the practice in 2009 with Drs. Wack and Graves and senior partner Dr. Andrews. She is PennHIP certified to help breeders select for the best hips in future generations of dogs, and has also had additional training in ultrasound. Her veterinary special interests include feline medicine, geriatrics (both canine and feline), dental health and surgery, and behavior. She has been an advisory board member of the Homeless Animal Rescue Team (HART) shelter for over five years. On the human side, she will be a certified EMT (basic) as of December of 2009. In her free time, she loves to run both trails and roads, especially longer distances, so far up to 50K (31 miles) in trail races. She also enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing, and just about all things outdoors, and would like renew her dedication to playing her classical guitar.
Dr. Oonagh Wack joined Falmouth Veterinary Hospital in 2005 and resides in Harpswell with her husband, Dr. John Keating, a veterinary pathologist and assistant professor at Tufts Veterinary School. A native of Canada, she earned her Bachelor’s of Science from St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia and her veterinary doctorate from Atlantic Veterinary College on Prince Edward Island. She furthered her veterinary education as an intern in small animal medicine and surgery at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. Drs. Wack and Keating have an extensive family including four dogs, five cats, three tanks of fish, and two birds with a medley of creative names including Slart, Pete Townsend, Ava Gardner, and Joe Strummer amongst others. Dr. Wack’s special veterinary interests include surgery, ophthalmology, and pocket pets. She became a part owner of Falmouth Veterinary Hospital along with Drs. Hazzard and Graves, joining senior partner Dr. Andrews, in 2009. In her free time, she is an avid gardener and kayaker, and she loves hiking with her dogs.
Dr. Brian Graves, his wife Jennifer, and their chocolate lab Hudson and yellow lab Jack are residents of South Portland. Dr. Graves grew up in Connecticut, then came to Maine for his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College, followed by his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada. He then completed a veterinary internship at the Southern California Veterinary Referral Hospital in Irvine California. His has recently had additional training in ultrasound, which is his veterinary special interest. He became part owner of Falmouth Veterinary Hospital in 2009 with colleagues Dr. Hazzard, Dr. Wack, and senior partner Dr. Andrews. He particularly loves Falmouth Veterinary Hospital because of the team-oriented approach, the exceptionally pets and their owners. He enjoys ice hockey and downhill skiing in his free time.
